Mini Charm Medallion

Hellooo everyone! I'm so excited today because I get to show you the secret sewing that I was working on a little while ago!

Ta daaaaaaa!!!!! It's a Mini Medallion Quilt using two mini charm packs (and some background fabric obviously!) for the Pre-Cuts edition of Fat Quarterly which is available to buy now.

The pattern is designed to be made with either one mini charm pack to make a cushion/wall-hanging of 16" or two mini charm packs which make a baby sized quilt of around 36".

I had a lot of fun coming up with this design. Mini charm packs are a bit of a weakness of mine, they're like the fabric alternative of a magazine.....I get to browse a whole fabric line for just a few pounds!!! I also have a bit of a fascination with medallion quilts - there's at least one or two on my bucket list - so I thought it would be fun to try and combine the two things together!

I used the colourful and sunny Daydream by Kate Spain with Kona Snow for the background to really make the colours pop. It worked really well and then I realised that I was going to have to do something quite special with the quilting to add texture and interest to all the negative space.

I used Aurifil 50wt red (2270) to do one line of echo quilting around the central star and Aurifil 50wt in pale yellow (2110) and went a bit crazy with the free-motion quilting, using different patterns for each of the borders. It was quite an adventure as it's the biggest FMQ project I've undertaken. Once I'd had a stern chat with my inner perfectionist about keeping my stitches even - it was fun and  quite liberating too, although I can see many areas for improvement. I can definitely see more FMQ in my future!

So, deets;

Pattern:: Mini Medallion, Fat Quarterly Magazine
Fabric:: Kate Spain Daydream, Kona Snow, Kona Candy Green (binding), IKEA Britten Nummer (backing)
Size:: 36" x 36"

A big thank you to the Fat Quarterly team for liking my idea enough to include it in their magazine, to Anna for some quilting advice once I'd started my FMQ journey and to Justine for speedily sending me the binding fabric!!!

I'd love to see if you make one........if you're Instagram/Twitter maybe you could use the hashtag #minicharmmedallion so that I can see them all (clearly, I'm expecting world sewing-room domination here - hee hee!!!)

Thanks for listening to my excited ramblings! Normal blog posting will resume shortly!!!!!
