Mini Charm Medallion

Hellooo everyone! I'm so excited today because I get to show you the secret sewing that I was working on a little while ago!

Ta daaaaaaa!!!!! It's a Mini Medallion Quilt using two mini charm packs (and some background fabric obviously!) for the Pre-Cuts edition of Fat Quarterly which is available to buy now.

The pattern is designed to be made with either one mini charm pack to make a cushion/wall-hanging of 16" or two mini charm packs which make a baby sized quilt of around 36".

I had a lot of fun coming up with this design. Mini charm packs are a bit of a weakness of mine, they're like the fabric alternative of a magazine.....I get to browse a whole fabric line for just a few pounds!!! I also have a bit of a fascination with medallion quilts - there's at least one or two on my bucket list - so I thought it would be fun to try and combine the two things together!

I used the colourful and sunny Daydream by Kate Spain with Kona Snow for the background to really make the colours pop. It worked really well and then I realised that I was going to have to do something quite special with the quilting to add texture and interest to all the negative space.

I used Aurifil 50wt red (2270) to do one line of echo quilting around the central star and Aurifil 50wt in pale yellow (2110) and went a bit crazy with the free-motion quilting, using different patterns for each of the borders. It was quite an adventure as it's the biggest FMQ project I've undertaken. Once I'd had a stern chat with my inner perfectionist about keeping my stitches even - it was fun and  quite liberating too, although I can see many areas for improvement. I can definitely see more FMQ in my future!

So, deets;

Pattern:: Mini Medallion, Fat Quarterly Magazine
Fabric:: Kate Spain Daydream, Kona Snow, Kona Candy Green (binding), IKEA Britten Nummer (backing)
Size:: 36" x 36"

A big thank you to the Fat Quarterly team for liking my idea enough to include it in their magazine, to Anna for some quilting advice once I'd started my FMQ journey and to Justine for speedily sending me the binding fabric!!!

I'd love to see if you make one........if you're Instagram/Twitter maybe you could use the hashtag #minicharmmedallion so that I can see them all (clearly, I'm expecting world sewing-room domination here - hee hee!!!)

Thanks for listening to my excited ramblings! Normal blog posting will resume shortly!!!!!

Catching up

Good morning everyone! I hope you all have a lovely weekend planned? Some exciting news today is that I'm guest posting over at Lily's Quilts with the Siblings Together x&+ quilt.

I've spent most of this week trying to catch-up with myself and clear the decks. I've been wanting to do some more charity blocks so alongside the wonky crosses for Siblings Together that I made last weekend, I've also spent some time quilting orphan blocks for Little Islands Quilting Soy Amado.

Even Little Girl made one!!!!! She really wanted to help make a block for the Street Children and was so excited to go through my fabric stash (I only had to veto one choice!). I helped with the cutting but she sewed all the pieces together, pressed when needed and then did some simple quilting (she's 7, just in case you're wondering!). I think she did a fantastic job and it was taken in to school for a show and tell.

Next week I'm hoping there'll be some more clearing of the decks as well as some new sewing - I've got lots of things I'm desperate to try out!!!

April Siblings Together Bee Block ✔

Helloooooo. Happy Easter!!! I can't believe that nearly three weeks have gone since my last post! It's been a spectacular Easter holiday filled with lots of trips to local castles and into Wales: the weather has been amazing and it's been so much fun!

I've even managed some sewing! First on my list for the month was April's Sibling Together Block and Queen Bee Hadley asked us to make two St Louis 16 patch with the Moda Sewing Box Line by Gina Martin;

Its such a fun range and you can get some of the lines at the Village Haberdashery at the moment. As always a massive thank you to all of the people who have so generously sponsored this bee;

In case you're new to my blog (!) Siblings Together is a charity that brings together brothers and sisters that have been separated in the care system for an annual holiday camp to catch up with the hope of providing them all with a quilt that they can take away with them as a reminder of their time together. You can see Lynne's original post here. There's sadly too many children in the care system so we are looking to get together as many quilt donations as we can so that every child can leave with a quilt. If you feel inspired to make a quilt that would be fantastic and all the details are on Lynne's blog or in the Flickr group. If not a quilt, maybe you have a spare 30 minutes and you could make a few blocks? At the moment there is a collection for 9" finished wonky crosses blocks and I whipped these up this morning;

Thanks for reading and back soon with some more sewing!

This week has been mostly about....

...running around like the proverbial blue-bummed fly!!!!! There's been play sessions, school plays at night, Easter services......I'm certainly ready for the holidays!

In between all the craziness, I've fitted in some more stitching on my Kantha sample, not far to go now!

....attempting some advanced-to-me dressmaking! A friend has asked me to adjust her wedding dress (a vintage hand made dress - eek! No pressure then!) which has meant I've needed to grade up the pattern a couple of dress sizes.....I have to say I spent a lot of time feeling like a contestant on the GBSB!!!!

Unfortunately, I never heard back from the winner of the purse kit so I'm afraid that I had to chose another winner which is.....Kerry (or Penny as I first called you!)
Hope you all have a fabulous weekend,

Didn't March fly by?!

Hello! I really can't seem to keep up with just how quickly the days are flying by at the moment!!! And now we're in the crazy week of school plays/Easter services......I'm so ready for the holidays!!!!!

I seem to have been sewing constantly on my child-free days, but I'm not sure that it's all made it on to the blog?! There has been my STQB, some coasters and a clasp purse...

A couple of weeks ago I went on a Kantha course with my local quilt guild. I still have a couple of segments left to go on the leaf (well, it's meant to be a leaf but I decided that rainbow would be more exciting than greens!) and am thinking it might look quite nice on my sewing room wall when it's finished...

There's also been a bit of dressmaking for a friend - I'm very nearly finished so if she doesn't mind modelling for me then hopefully there will be some pictures! I have to say that making the inside so neat has made me particularly pleased!!!!

And finally there's been a bit of secret sewing - I've been posting some sneak peeks on Instagram (I'm @fabricandflowersuk if you'd like to stalk follow me!!!) and hopefully it won't be too long before I can reveal all!

And because it's the first of the month, and I'm timely for once, I'm going to link up with Lynne for the Fresh Sewing Day

Lily's Quilts

See you soon,

Todays sky ● grey start with beautiful blue skies later on
